NGC 4565 – The Needle Galaxy

NGC 4565, popularly known as the Needle Galaxy, is one of the most spectacular edge-on spiral galaxies in the night sky. Located in the constellation of Coma Berenices, at an approximate distance of 40–50 million light-years from Earth, it is considered one of the finest examples of a spiral galaxy viewed almost perfectly edge-on. It was discovered by William Herschel on April 6, 1785, and has since become the subject of numerous studies on the structure of galactic disks and central bulges.

Its remarkable orientation allows astronomers to observe in exceptional detail the thin dust lane running across the entire galactic disk, making it a benchmark object for understanding the distribution of gas, dust, and stellar populations in spiral galaxies.
